Shykeem Gardner, a Beaufort, SC native, is a dedicated dancer with a diverse background in performance and education. He began dancing in elementary school but rediscovered his passion after a high school injury. Encouraged by friends and driven by a new sense of purpose, he developed an interest in the art form, initially learning through online resources like YouTube, from watching other dancers, and attending national workshops and conferences.
After high school, Shykeem formalized his training at Larew Dance Centre and began choreographing his own pieces. He embraces an open style, blending contemporary, lyrical, hip hop, footwork, and jazz for a more eclectic approach. His favorite pieces never focus on one style opting for a more eclectic blend of dance.
His love for dance flourishes through collaboration in local theater, teaching, and choreographing. Although primarily self-taught, he considers dance a God-given talent. Shykeem finds joy in witnessing others grow in their dance journeys, often valuing their progress over his own.
In addition to dancing, he works full-time as an Outside Cart Attendant at a local golf resort, balancing his professional and personal passions. Shykeem’s journey reflects his resilience and deep love for dance, which he sees as an integral part of his identity.
As an introvert, dance has become my voice—a way for me to express myself in ways words never could. My preferred style is open style, embracing the freedom and creativity it offers, but I am deeply versatile and enjoy teaching both lyrical and hip-hop as well. Open style consists of telling a story with your body but still being in the motion of hip hop and also combining moves from other genres as well. Every form of movement speaks to me, but it’s the dance to music that truly allows me to communicate the emotions and stories that I find difficult to put into words.
Teaching dance is where my heart truly lies. I find immense joy in working with others, especially those who are new to dance. Watching them discover the rhythm within themselves and grow through movement is profoundly rewarding. I believe that given time and varied approaches to learning, anyone can learn. I am a lifelong learner, constantly seeking to expand my knowledge and skills. This passion for continuous growth fuels my commitment to both my own development. Dance is more than just an art form to me—it’s a way of life, a means of connection, and a never-ending journey of self-expression.
