THERAPEUTIC EXPERTISE: Art Therapy
Laura Allen, M.A., ATR-BC
I am a graduate with a Master’s degree from the George Washington University and have been a board certified art therapist and certified mindfulness-based stress reduction (M.B.S.R.) practitioner for over twenty years. My specialties include trauma, psychological disorders, Neurodiversity, postpartum mental health, LGBTQ+ advocacy, Applied Behavior Analysis interventions, parent education, life transitions, and addiction. My expertise extends to working within various groups as well as the Charleston and Berkeley County school systems providing art therapy interventions, as well as supporting individual clients from childhood through adulthood, using the transformative power of art to promote healing, resilience, and mental well-being across diverse populations.
Creating visual art is a multi-layered process for me. I draw inspiration from various sources, including nature, emotions, and diverse cultures. My work often begins with conceptualizing ideas, followed by sketching and refining the composition. The choice of materials and techniques plays a crucial role, as I aim to convey specific textures and atmospheres. Throughout the creative journey, experimentation and adaptation are key, allowing the artwork to evolve organically. Ultimately, I strive to evoke emotions and prompt viewers to interpret the piece in their unique ways.
