About

Artist Bio

I have taught Effective Communication Skills (Creative Writing & Public Speaking) and drama to students, adults, and community groups for over 30 years.

I train middle and high school students how to produce documentary films – films that promote excellence and community service, and denounce violence.

I have written, directed, and produced seven stage plays, and eight documentary films. Six of the films were funded by entities such as Richland County Conservation Commission, and the SC. Humanities Council. DVDs and written transcripts of my films are housed at the Richland County Public Library and the University of South Carolina.

My documentary film, “We are Lakeview,” was used as support material to secure a historic marker for Lakeview School, formerly, Lakeview Colored School.

I wrote, directed, and produced the documentary film, “The Hallowed Halls,” which told the story of how three segregated-era Black high schools produced extraordinary citizens. The film was saluted for excellence by the South Carolina General Assembly.

I am tremendously proud of the reputation that my dogged work ethics and focused drive have earned me. When people hear “Gene Washington productions,” they know they will witness quality, meaningful, and thought-provoking artistic work.

Artist Statement

I view my skills (writing, public speaking, film & play production) not only as tools to produce entertainment, but as instruments to assist communities in combating social ills such as gang violence, domestic violence, and hopelessness.
