Folklife & Traditional Arts

Connecting South Carolina citizens and visitors to the state’s dynamic artistic and cultural traditions

The SCAC’s folklife and traditional arts program helps keep alive traditions that have become our shared inheritance as they are passed down from generation to generation. We accomplish that goal in a variety of ways:

• Provide grant portfolio for traditional artists and organizations hosting folklife activities
• Support collaborations between arts providers and local, statewide, and national funders to maximize impact of public funds
• Celebrate and support the many ways South Carolinians engage in artistic expression and creativity
• Develop opportunities for individuals and organizations to communicate the role that traditional arts and folklife play in our quality of life, including education, health and wellbeing, and economic vitality

Meet the program director

Laura Marcus Green, Ph.D.

Folklife fieldworker. Researcher. Writer. Curator and consultant.

Laura Marcus Green has put those skills to work for various arts and culture agencies nationwide, but is currently the folklife & traditional arts director at the SCAC. In her role, she manages grant programs, conducts fieldwork, and co-develops projects including the Folklife Field School, Communal Pen Writing Workshops, and the Creative Aging Initiative.

She holds a Ph.D. in folklore from Indiana University and an M.A. in folklore/anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin. Selected prior positions include folklife & traditional arts program director at McKissick Museum and community engagement coordinator for the Museum of International Folk Art’s Gallery of Conscience.
