SC Student WINS National Poetry Out Loud Contest!
Janae Claxton, a senior at First Baptist School in Charleston, is the first South Carolina student to win the national Poetry Out Loud competition in the 12-year history of the state contest, besting competitors from more than 50 states and U.S. territories. She made history in March by becoming the state’s first back-to-back Poetry Out Loud state competition winner. On Tuesday, she added another first to her resume as the first South Carolina student to advance out of round one of the national finals.As national champion, Janae receives a $20,000 prize and national honors. Healing and Development Through the Arts
Some recent studies further support the positive effects of arts participation on the human body. Exposure is certainly nice, but The Hub focused recently on the actual doing that's helped along by a handful of South Carolina Arts Commission operating support grantees. One of those, Ballet Spartanburg, recently received the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Award for the Arts in part because of the healing effects of one of its community programs. Read more >>
