Taiko Charleston is committed to the Japanese taiko art form, which draws from martial arts, dance, and percussion. The ensemble’s performances combine athleticism, precision, and expressive energy, creating powerful and engaging experiences for a wide range of audiences. Under the direction of founder Tracy Bush, Taiko Charleston has established itself as a leading taiko ensemble in the Southeast since 2010.
School assembly programs feature dynamic drumming inspired by Japanese festivals and traditions, introducing students to cultural stories, rhythm concepts, and participatory music-making. Performances are interactive and age-appropriate, incorporating audience participation and rhythm-based activities.
Residency programs offer a deeper educational experience, supporting collaboration, listening, and ensemble skills as students learn traditional rhythms and a core taiko composition.
In addition to educational programming, Taiko Charleston presents performances for community, cultural, and corporate events and collaborates with regional arts organizations throughout South Carolina and the Southeast.
The mission of Taiko Charleston Japanese Drumming Troupe is to create contemporary performance work rooted in the history, discipline, and cultural traditions of Japanese taiko. Our artistic approach balances respect for traditional forms with space for personal voice, physical expression, and the lived context of the communities we serve.
At the core of our work is the relationship between sound, movement, and presence. Taiko is both musical and physical, and our compositions are shaped by embodied rhythm, precision, and ensemble awareness. Drawing from traditional taiko forms, we create performances that emphasize clarity, intention, and collective energy, addressing themes of discipline, cooperation, and shared responsibility within group performance.
Taiko Charleston’s work also addresses issues of access and cultural exchange. We regularly perform in schools, libraries, festivals, and community spaces, often reaching audiences with limited access to live cultural arts. Through school-based residencies, workshops, and public classes, we present taiko as a living tradition that fosters listening, perseverance, collaboration, and respect for cultural lineage.
Ultimately, our work seeks to honor taiko’s heritage while allowing it to remain relevant and responsive—connecting tradition to contemporary community life through performance, education, and shared experience.
