Judy is a visual artist living and working in Greenville, SC. Her primary art medium is paper collage. She teaches the art process of collage to adults and children. Most students embrace it after they get accustomed to this way of art-making. In the school classroom, while incorporating the teacher suggested subject, she encourages creative, student-led idea formation, with hopes of empowering both non-artist and artists to feel confident in their ideas and art work. For example, in a 9th grade biology class they did self-portraits in which at least two of the 9th grade biology standards were incorporated into the work. Using a poetry prompt, each student wrote a poem about themselves which was their starting place in helping them formulate visual ideas for their portraits. Relating a biology standard to their visual ideas about self brought unique understanding of the standards.
