About

Kirkland Smith draws from her love of realism and portraiture to create 3-Dimensional paintings which deliver the message of environmental responsibility in an evocative way. To portray the problem of overconsumption and its effects in a disposable society, she uses everyday disposable objects as her medium, rather than the subject of her work.

In 2013, Kirkland received the People’s Choice Award at Artfields, the Southeast’s largest art competition, held in Lake City, SC. Her assemblage work can be found in public collections in SC, including The Greenville Children’s Museum, The Inn at the Crossroads, Lake City, SC Department of Commerce, The Richland County Public Library, The University of South Carolina, and the SC Governor’s School for the Arts, Greenville.

Native to SC, Kirkland grew up in Mt. Pleasant, SC and received her B.A. in Studio Arts from the University of SC. She later studied classical painting and drawing at Studio Escalier in Argenton, France. She married her high school sweetheart, James Smith, and together they built a life in Columbia, SC. They have 4 children and 2 spoiled, but happy, dogs. Kirkland is currently a resident artist at Stormwater Studios.
