About

ARTIST STATEMENT
“Textiles are in my bone marrow. My great grandparents, grandparents and great aunts all had a hand in the creation of cloth and garments. Fiber is my lineage and my legacy. I know it’s stories because they are my family’s stories. Much in the same way a weaver spider is the protectress of the garden, I am the protectress of the skills, knowledge and practices my family has cultivated for generations.”

BIOGRAPHY
Makenzye Barfield is a native South Carolinian from the rural town of Gilbert. Though she now resides in Aiken, it was during her childhood that she first learned to sew and crochet from her great-grandmother. The act of creating brought her such joy that she went on to study fibers at the Savannah College of Art and Design; receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2013.
