S.C. Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (SCVLA) is a collaboration project of the USC School of Law Pro Bono Program, the USC School of Law Nonprofit Organizations Clinic, the S.C. Arts Commission and the S.C. Bar Pro Bono Program. The purpose of the group is to provide pro bono legal assistance to the arts community in South Carolina.

The SCVLA is a need-based service that refers those needing legal assistance to lawyers who have agreed to donate their time. Nonprofit referrals are to the Nonprofit Organizations Clinic and some volunteer lawyers. The service uses an online application system to gather facts from artists and arts organizations to match them with appropriate legal representation.

SCVLA, which utilizes a program that operates on an academic schedule, cannot assign an attorney to a specific client, nor can it assist all clients. Some clients may be referred to an attorney outside the program.

Informational Meeting

The SCVLA partners will hold two sessions of an informational meeting to talk about the new service available to artists and art organizations.

  • Have you wondered about what steps to take in protecting your work in the age of electronic reproduction, the Internet and social media?
  • Have you ever gotten into a contract dispute and needed legal advice or needed help in interpreting or drafting a contract?
  • Would you like to incorporate a nonprofit in order to protect yourself and other board members from liability?
  • Are you uncertain about your existing legal documents?

If you answered YES to one or more of these questions, then join us and learn about a new legal service being offered to eligible artists and nonprofit organizations.
