The Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards

The City of Greenwood, South Carolina

2014 Government Award

The City of Greenwood has made strong intentional progress in developing the arts and culture into an economic engine for the city, county and region. From the development of the Emerald Triangle Arts and Cultural District and support of arts and cultural venues and operations to improvements in uptown design and support for festivals, the city has taken a leadership role for arts and culture.

City of Greenwood

In 2004, the city embarked on the development of a City Center Master Plan with a heavy focus on revitalizing arts and culture. From this plan came the development of the Emerald Triangle, a cultural district anchored by three major arts and cultural entities, the Arts Center, Greenwood Community Theater and The Museum.

Past and current mayors, council members and city managers have played visionary and guiding roles in the growth of Greenwood as a nurturing and supportive environment for the arts. The impact has been an increase in the number of arts venues, events and opportunities for residents, the beautification and redevelopment of uptown Greenwood, measurable increases in new businesses opening, increased business revenue, and a significant increase in tourism. The concrete vision of the city has provided the critical mass to bring cooperation from partners, branding for Greenwood and marketing the city and region to a larger audience. The city and its officials have been constant in their efforts, vision, public policy and leadership to improve and support the quality of life in Greenwood through arts and cultural development.
