The Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards

Edward Rice

2014 Artist Award

Edward RiceEdward Rice was raised in North Augusta, South Carolina, where he maintains his studio today. He studied with Freeman Schoolcraft at Augusta State University for two years before becoming his protégé an additional four years.

For the past 35 years, Rice has been depicting the vernacular architecture found along the border of central Georgia and South Carolina. During the 1980s he became known for his meticulously rendered architectural paintings, described as both lyrical and literary. Painted on-site, these radiant works resulted from a slow, precise and complex process through which a sense of place, a season, and a time of day were captured in telling detail.

Rice is a past recipient of the South Carolina Arts Commission’s Artist Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts/Southern Arts Federation Regional Fellowship. His paintings have been included in exhibitions in London, New York, Santa Fe, Atlanta and other locations. His work is included in the State Art Collection and in the collections of the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Columbia Museum of Art, the South Carolina State Museum, the Greenville County Museum of Art, the Georgia Museum of Art, the Morris Museum of Art and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.
