Work by South Carolina Artists
Thresholds: Expressions of Art & Spiritual Life
Selection Process
Artists included in the exhibition were selected by guest curator Eleanor
Heartney based on nominations received from each of the five states participating
in Thresholds. Each state arts agency invited nominators to participate
in the process by identifying artists in their respective states who met
the eligibility requirement of residency and whose work addressed the issues
outlined in the curator’s statement. Artists were notified of their
nomination by the South Carolina Arts Commission on behalf of their respective
arts council/arts commission and were invited to submit materials for review.
One hundred and seven artists responded to the invitation to submit work
for consideration by the curator. The review took place in mid-August, 2003
over a two-day period in Charleston, SC at the College of Charleston and
the Gibbes Museum of Art. The intensive two-day process resulted in the
selection of the 54 artists included in the exhibition.
