COLUMBIA, S.C. – Communities and organizations interested in learning how to attract cultural tourists—travelers interested in a region's heritage and arts—can attend one of five cultural tourism workshops taking place from Dec. 11 – Jan. 10. Held by the South Carolina Arts Commission, the class covers how to create arts-centered products, projects and partnerships.
The same workshop is being presented from noon to 3:30 p.m. at five locations: Dec. 11 at the Sakas Theatre in Greenville; Dec. 13 at the North Charleston Cultural Arts Complex in North Charleston; Dec. 18 at the Lee Nursing Building in Florence; Jan. 8 at the Arts Council of York County Center for the Arts in Rock Hill; and Jan. 10 at the Vista Room at Suggs & Kelly Law Firm in Columbia. Each is free and open to the public. Registration is required. For a registration form, workshop agenda or directions, visit www.southcarolinaarts.com and click on Cultural Tourism under "Arts News."
Workshop attendees will also learn about the South Carolina Arts Commission's Cultural Tourism Initiative, and find out how to apply for a project planning or implementation grant. Planning grants are made up to $5,000, and implementation grants are made up to $10,000. Individuals from various sectors, such as arts, travel, retail and hospitality, are welcome. Potential applicants—especially first-time applicants—for grants are strongly encouraged to attend.
The S.C. Arts Commission established the Cultural Tourism Initiative in 2005 to support the development and enhancement of arts-centered tourism products, projects and partnerships which attract cultural tourists and generate expenditures to positively impact local, regional or statewide economies. To date, the arts agency has awarded over $215,000 to communities statewide. For more information about the Cultural Tourism program, visit www.southcarolinaarts.com or call (803) 734-8696.
