Two New Board Members Appointed to S.C. Arts Commission Board

COLUMBIA, S.C. –Barbara R. Nwokike of Charleston and Henry Horowitz of Greenville have been appointed by Governor Mark Sanford to serve on the board of the South Carolina Arts Commission. Both will work with the board to govern the state agency charged with creating a thriving arts environment that benefits all South Carolinians.
“Mr. Horowitz and Mrs. Nwokike both have extensive backgrounds of proven leadership, and I am grateful to have them join our board,” said SC Arts Commission Executive Director Suzette Surkamer. “Their diverse perspectives and experience will be an asset to the agency as we continue our 40-year tradition of working to make the arts available to citizens, schools and communities throughout the state.”
Henry Horowitz, a Certified Public Accountant with more than 35 years of experience, is principal and managing partner of Oxford Capital Partners LLC, a real estate investment firm in Greenville. He is also managing member of MedProperties Holdings LLC, a private equity fund firm based in Dallas, Texas.
Horowitz serves on the Wachovia Bank South Carolina Regional Advisory Board, the Furman University Advisory Council and numerous other boards in Greenville. He received his bachelor’s degree from Bernard Baruch School of Public and Business Administration and a master’s in business administration from New York University.
Barbara R. Nwokike is currently a senior remedial project manager with the Department of the Navy in Charleston, where she has managed a number of multi-million dollar environmental projects for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command South East. She also co-owns Gallery Chuma, a Charleston-based art gallery, with her husband, Chuma Nwokike.
Nwokike graduated from Tennessee State University in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in civil/environmental engineering. She is a member of the Civil Engineers Club of Charleston, an associate member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 469.
The governing body of the SC Arts Commission is composed of nine volunteer citizens appointed at large by the governor and confirmed by the Senate for the purpose of guiding the development of the arts in the state.
