COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Arts Commission Board Member Carolyn McCoy Govan has recently been inducted into the South Carolina Black Hall of Fame. An educator, artist and avid arts advocate, Govan and nine other honorees were recognized during a banquet and ceremony held June 22 in Columbia.
Teaching art in the Marlboro county school system since 2003, she has also taught in Darlington, Lee and Sumter counties during her 31-year career. Govan attended South Carolina State University, where she was the first art major to graduate from the university. Govan has furthered her studies in various institutions, including the College of Charleston, Francis Marion University and Clemson.
In addition to serving on the South Carolina Arts Commission Board, Govan serves on the Hartsville Museum Board and SC State University Art Alumni Executive Council. She is a member of several state and national organizations, such as the Arts in Basic Curriculum steering committee and National Education Association.
"Carolyn’s commitment to the arts and selfless devotion to education is inspiring," said South Carolina Arts Commission Executive Director Suzette Surkamer. "She brings to the board a lifetime of experience in the arts and education fields, and we are proud that she has received this honor.”
Govan’s artwork has been shown at art museums in Hartsville, Florence, Orangeburg and Bishopville. She also does work for various youth and community programs, such as the “I Have a Dream” foundation and the South Sixth Street Youth and Elohim Outreach Program.
