COLUMBIA, S.C. – Governor Mark Sanford has appointed Elizabeth Factor of Charleston to the Board of the South Carolina Arts Commission. She will join other board members to help direct the state agency’s resources toward supporting a thriving arts environment in South Carolina.
"Mrs. Factor’s finance and governance experience will complement the wide range of expertise among our current board members," said S.C. Arts Commission Board Chairman Charles T. “Bud” Ferillo. “She brings an incredible wealth of knowledge to the board and a great appreciation for the arts, which will help the board in its mission to make the arts accessible to all South Carolina citizens.”
Factor, a resident of Charleston, previously worked as an investment banker and tax counsel to Babcock & Brown LP in New York City. Prior to that, she practiced law at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in New York City. Her specialties range from complex international tax arbitrage to corporate governance and public finance.
She has been involved with such arts organizations as The Drawing Center, an internationally renowned museum of works on paper, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, both in New York City. With her husband, Mallory, and Charleston’s Gibbes Museum of Art, she established the Factor Prize in Southern Art in 2007 to recognize visual artists whose work has contributed to a new understanding of the South.
Factor was elected as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in 2002. She is a graduate of Phillips Academy, Columbia University and Yale Law School. She and her husband have five children.
The Arts Commission Board is composed of nine volunteer citizens appointed at large for three-year terms by the governor and confirmed by the senate for the purpose of guiding the development of the arts in the state. Commissioners are residents of South Carolina who are selected for their practice of, participation in or support of the creative and interpretive arts. The Commissioners meet regularly to take action on funding and formulate policy for the Arts Commission.
