“Artists are a fundamental part of the South Carolina creative workforce,” said S.C. Arts Commission Acting Executive Director Ken May. "Fellowship grants enable them to create their work, advance their careers and to contribute to community life."

The board of the S.C. Arts Commission approves fellowships based on recommendations made by out-of-state review panelists, who select fellows and alternates based solely on their review of anonymous work samples. This year's dance panelists were Claire West of Pheonix, Ariz., Jennifer Tsukayama and Casey Blake, both of Tempe, Ariz. Visual arts panelists were Kimberly Dummons of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Susan Knowles and Lanie Gannon, both of Nashville, Tenn.

Individual artists working in poetry, prose, acting and playwriting can apply for the 2010-2011 fellowship awards. The deadline to apply is Oct. 1.
