COLUMBIA, S.C. – VSA arts of South Carolina demonstrates its confidence that all kids can create by funding two projects that benefit children with disabilities in the Lowcountry. The nonprofit, which aims to provide quality arts experiences to children, youth and adults with disabilities, has funded a drumming residency at Moultrie Middle School, as well as the "All Kids Can Create" visual arts exhibit at the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, both of which coincide with the Piccolo Spoleto and Spoleto Arts Festivals.
The visual arts exhibit displays work that is being created by children participating in art workshops on May 9, May 30 and June 6— from 10:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. and again from 11:15 a.m. – 12 p.m. Nationally recognized artist Arianne King-Comer will teach children with special needs and the general public how to create poetry on textile through the batik technique, a traditional indigo dye process. Work from the residencies will be on display at the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry May 22-June 4.
Open to the public, the workshops are free with museum admission or CML membership. A grant covers the cost for children with special needs/disabilities. Registration is required. To register, contact Margaret Crane, CML program coordinator, at (864) 853-8962 x222 or margaret@explorecml.org.
The second project is a nine-week drumming residency, designed for both disabled and non-disabled students at Moultrie Middle School. Led by Fode Moussa Camara, a certified master drummer who has traveled the world with his career, the residency has made it possible for one student, who was unable to participate in traditional music classes, to play alongside her peers.
The class culminates with three performances, where the students will show off their new talent. After first demonstrating their skills to the middle school’s PTA on May 21, the students will take the main stage at 11 a.m. on May 23 during the Children’s Festival and again at noon on May 30 at CML.
