COLUMBIA, S.C. – The S.C. Arts Foundation presents the S.C. Arts Gala to celebrate the state’s arts community and to recognize the 2011 Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Awards for the Arts recipients. The gala is set for 7:30 p.m. May 4 in the Grand Hall at 701 Whaley in Columbia, and includes an art auction and sale of original artworks by some of the Palmetto State’s most recognized artists. Tickets are $75 and are available online at SouthCarolinaArts.com.

The gala is an annual fundraiser that supports the arts education and arts development programs of the S.C. Arts Commission. Last year, the foundation contributed more than $50,000 to bolster programs such as artist fellowships and in-school artist residencies throughout the state.

During the gala, the Arts Foundation is recognizing this year’s Governor’s Awards for the Arts recipients, including Lifetime Achievement Award winners Mary Jackson, a nationally recognized sweetgrass basket maker from Johns Island, and C. Thomas "Tommy" Wyche, a key champion for the arts in Greenville for nearly 50 years.

Other awards recipients are Heidi Darr-Hope of Columbia, Terry K. Hunter of Orangeburg, Carolina First Bank and Carolina Youth Symphony of Greenville, and Nina Liu & Friends Gallery and Steven Rosenberg of Charleston.

Also, Columbia’s Linda C. Stern, former S.C. Arts Commission chairman and S.C. Arts Foundation president, will receive a Leadership Award in recognition of the time, talents and resources she spent advancing the statewide cause of public access and public participation in the arts for nearly two decades.

Those interested in attending the gala can reserve tickets online or by calling (803) 734-8696.
