Sidebottom Named Interim Executive Director of Design Arts Partnership

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Richard Sidebottom has been named the interim executive director of the S.C. Design Arts Partnership, a joint initiative of the South Carolina Arts Commission and Clemson University. Sidebottom will take on the role of helping South Carolina cities and towns improve the quality of their built and natural environments.
Sidebottom will assume the position held by Lindsey Moore, who is leaving the partnership to pursue a career in education. Sidebottom will manage the organization’s design arts programs, including the Mayors Institute and its most recent effort, the School Design and Sustainable Communities Initiative. He will also coordinate the annual Design Colloquium and other community design education and leadership training activities.
“Under Lindsey’s leadership, the Design Arts Partnership has strengthened the role of design in communities around the state; we’re proud of this collaboration and its accomplishments,” said S.C. Arts Commission Executive Director Susie Surkamer. “We’re excited to welcome Richard to our team, and are confident that his architecture and preservation background will permit him to continue this fine work.”
Sidebottom most recently served as an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina. He previously held the position of supervisor of compliance, tax incentives and outreach programs at the S.C. Department of Archives & History, where he formerly served as a historic architecture consultant and review & compliance coordinator, in Columbia.
Sidebottom has performed research and conducted presentations on historic preservation in South Carolina and abroad. He has a master’s degree in architectural history from the University of Virginia, where he also earned a preservation certificate and served as the vice president of Thomas Jefferson Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history and classical studies from Emory University in Atlanta.
