3DayFilm Festival

On your marks. . . . Get set. . . . Shoot!

logo for the 3 Day Film Festival3DayFilm, a film festival sponsored by the South Carolina Arts Commission, Columbia Museum of Art, and IndieReels Festival for High School Filmmakers, has begun! Middle- and high-school filmmakers have 72 hours -- three days -- to create and submit a short drama, comedy, documentary, or new media/animation no more than five minutes in length.

Here are the three elements a film must include to qualify for entry:

  1. This object: A roll of toilet paper.
It must appear in the film, but it doesn't have to be a focal point; it can be in the background and can be used in any manner.

  2. This line of dialog: "There aren't any mice in outer space."
It can be used as a statement, a question – however you choose.

  3. A literary character: Completely up to you.
The only limitation is that the character must come from a published source. That source, however, can be anything from a comic book to a Camus novel.

Techie things to remember:

Your finished video can be anywhere from a few seconds to five minutes in length.

The RNE digital media lab will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday the 10th. That's six hours. Please note that even George Lucas wouldn't be able to edit large amounts of footage in that time. Think of it as a time for fine tuning, because even after you capture your footage and edit your shots, you'll need about 90 minutes for the computer to render the movie, then another 45 minutes to transfer that and burn it to disk. So please be there by noon if you plan to do any editing. And please choose your shots (have your shots marked and ready to capture) beforehand – you probably won't have enough time to search for things.

RNE has eight editing stations (desktop computers) with Adobe Premiere Pro (very similar to Final Cut Pro and just as dense and powerful). We have DVD disks, a DVD burner, a large external hard drive and several different types of USB and FireWire cables to transfer video. You still must bring the cables you need to transfer from the camera unless it writes to a mini-disk. We cannot transfer from a camcorder that writes to analogue tape (VHS). If you choose to create a VHS copy of your final cut using your home editing suite, however, then we can play the tape at the screening.

Please bring your entry fee and signed forms with you.

RNE is located at 7500 Brookfield Road, off Decker Boulevard. If you're coming along Decker from I-77, take a right onto Brookfield. If you're coming from Two Notch or Trenholm, take a left. Either way, there's Pho Viet, a McDonald's, and a BP at the intersection. Pull into the lot at the far side of the school (you'll see signs for Health Room and Center for Accelerated Preparation). Enter the school through the large glass atrium and follow the signs.

Pizza and screening:

Please plan to arrive at the Columbia Museum of Art, corner of Main and Hampton streets in Columbia, at 5 p.m. for prescreening pizza, soda, mixing, and mingling. If you didn't spend your editing time at RNE, please bring your entry fee and signed forms with you. We'll start show middle school entries promptly at 6 p.m., followed by high school entries.

Last thing:

Be not discouraged. Make it fun. Let your creativity and spirit of adventure lead you. Don't expect to come up with The Dark Knight. At 3DayFilm every effort is worth the screentime. Keep at it. Let's see what you can do.

We're available 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. at 3dayfilm@gmail.com or (803) 466-5458 for the duration of the festival.

Lights! Camera! 3DayFilm!

logo for the 3 Day Film Festival3DayFilm, a film festival sponsored by the South Carolina Arts Commission, Columbia Museum of Art, and IndieReels Festival for High School Filmmakers, will kick off at 3 p.m. on August 7, 2008. From that point, middle- and high-school filmmakers who enter will have 72 hours -- three days -- to create and submit a short drama, comedy, documentary, or new media/animation no more than five minutes in length. The event will culminate on August 10 at 6 p.m. with a screening of entries at the museum.

To qualify for entry, each film must include three elements: a line of dialog and an object (announced on the South Carolina Arts Commission's Web site and in an e-mail to registered entrants at the start of the festival) as well as a literary character chosen by the filmmaker.

All rising 7th- through rising 12th-graders residing in South Carolina are eligible to enter, either individually or in teams. To enter, send an e-mail to 3dayfilm@gmail.com - entry guidelines will be sent by return e-mail.

Starting at 6 p.m. on August 10, 3DayFilm will first screen entries from rising 7th - 9th graders, followed by entries from rising 10th - 12th graders. The reviewing panel will include Andy Smith, executive director of the Indie Grits Film Fest, and Gillian Albrecht, an actress and singer whose credits span Europe and Broadway.

To enter:

  • Send an e-mail to 3dayfilm@gmail.com. Include your name, phone number, secondary e-mail address (if you have one), street address, school, and year.
  • If you know whether you'll enter a drama, comedy, new media/animation, or documentary, tell us. You can change your mind, but we're curious.
  • Let us know if you do not have access to editing facilities. We are working with several schools in Columbia to open their digital media labs to 3DayFilm entrants on August 10. Only student entrants may use these facilities.
  • Submission requirements (line of dialog and object) will be e-mailed to you at 3 p.m. on August 7. They also will be posted at that time on the 3DayFilm Web page on the SC Arts Commission Web site.

Basics:

  • Submissions may run no more than five minutes (including credits) and must be on standard DVD or videotape.
  • Inclusion of material to which you do not hold the copyright, or for which you do not have written permission from the copyright holder, may disqualify your submission for additional screenings that IndieReels may arrange. The decision of IndieReels officials is final. There is no appeal.
  • No sex, nudity, gratuitous violence, or shoot-'em-ups. Minimal, if any, profanity or potty talk (you're smart enough to find a better way for your characters to express themselves, right?). We will adhere as closely as possible to the Motion Picture Association of America rating system - think the conservative end of PG. Any submission that we deem to exceed these limits will be pulled immediately. There is no appeal.
  • We know that some entrants live only a few minutes from the museum while others could live several hours away. Entrants who are traveling to Columbia from outside the Midlands will have a later deadline time.
  • Bring with you to the Columbia Museum of Art on August 10:
