AIA-SC Celebrates 150th Anniversary by
Joining SCDAP as Lead Sponsor of
2006-2007 SC Mayors Institute
This year, the American Institute of Architects celebrates their 150th anniversary nationwide. As part of the celebration, members will participate in creating the Blueprint for America: A Gift to the Nation. This initiative brings together design professionals, citizens, and community leaders to address community needs and inspire healthy, safe, livable and sustainable American communities. In South Carolina, AIA/SC will celebrate by making a generous donation to support the annual SC Mayors Institute Colloquium. Also, each regional section of AIA-- AIA Greenville, AIA Greater Columbia, AIA Spartanburg, AIA Grand Strand, AIA Charleston, and AIA Hilton Head-- will assist the participating Mayors Institute communities in developing community design visions for the future. Finally, AIA/SC will help support the South Carolina Community Design Summit, which the public will be invited to in the Spring. These efforts by AIA/SC and its sections represent a very special gift to the people of South Carolina. Thank you AIA and congratulations on 150 years of success!

2006-2007 Mayors Selected and the Fun Begins
Participating Officials
Mayor Rick Danner, Greer
Mayor John Douglas, Chesterfield
Mayor Steve Dukes, Johnsonville
Mayor Beth Phillip, Summerton
Representative Lanny Littlejohn, representing Glendale
County Councilwoman LeWana McKenzie, representing Clearwater
Beginning August 1, SCDAP and AIA/SC will visit each of these towns in preparation for our yearlong initiative to assist South Carolina communities in designing a healthy, safe, livable, and sustainable future. Following the visits, elected officials will take part in the SC Mayors Institute Colloquium, Nov. 13-15 in Columbia, SC. During the Colloquium, mayors and elected officials will present proposed community projects to a panel of national design experts including Kimberly Brown, Director of the Carl Small Town Center at Mississippi State, Craig Barton, Director of Architecture at the University of Virginia, John Knott, President and CEO of The Noisette Company in Charleston, Karen Gagnon, Director of Michigan’s Cool Cities Initiative, Rich Sucre, Architectural Historian with Page & Turnbull, San Francisco, and Rodney Swink, Director of North Carolina’s Main Street Program. The design team will provide commentary and recommendations for each project as well as a series of presentations to build leadership capacity for design.
In January, AIA/SC members and SCDAP will host “mini-charrettes” in each Mayors Institute town. AIA designers will provide their services on a volunteer basis in celebration of the 150th anniversary. In the Spring, SCDAP and AIA/SC will engage a broader audience at the South Carolina Community Design Summit which will take place at Clemson University’s Madren Conference Center. Design professionals, citizens, and municipal officials are expected to attend. During the Summit, visions from each charrette will be presented together as the Blueprint for South Carolina. This project will offer creative solutions to common design challenges faced by communities throughout the state. There are several available opportunities for volunteers and sponsors. For more information about Celebrating South Carolina Community Design, please contact Lindsey Gertz Moore at (803) 734-8622.

Thank You Louis
This summer the SC Design Arts Partnership has enjoyed having Louis Venters as our summer intern. Louis is completing his Ph.D. coursework in History at the University of South Carolina, focusing on issues of religion and race relations in the 20th-century South. With a minor field in Historic Preservation, he has experience in exhibit design, preservation theory and practice, and historical research and writing. This summer he has worked closely with two of our Mayors Institute towns, Newberry and Pacolet on developing projects that help them capture their authentic sense of place. Louis has done wonderful work and we are very proud of him!
