SC Arts Commission 2015 Poetry Fellow

William Hastings Hensel Jr.

 

photo of Hastings Hensel, winner of the South Carolina Arts Commission's 2015 poetry fellowshipHastings Hensel of Murrells Inlet is a lecturer in the English Department at Coastal Carolina University in Conway. He is the author of a chapbook, Control Burn, and his poems have appeared in numerous publications, including The Greensboro Review, 32 Poems, Cave Wall, Gray's Sporting Journal, Valley Voices and the Birmingham Poetry Review. His creative nonfiction has been published in South Carolina Living, Coastal Isles and Coastal Carolina Life. His awards include the 2011 Iron Horse Literary Review Single-Author contest, the Hopkins Review Fellowship from Johns Hopkins University and the Tennessee Williams Creative Writing Award from The University of the South. He has been nominated twice for a Pushcart Prize.

 

Hensel received a BA in English from Sewanee: The University of the South and an MFA in Writing from Johns Hopkins University. He has served on the staff of the annual summer Sewanee Writer’s Conference for six years, and prior to joining Coastal Carolina in 2009, he taught in the Department of Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins.
