The Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Awards

Art Auction - Call to Artists

The South Carolina Arts Foundation seeks high quality artwork to include in the South Carolina Art Auction (formerly the Verner Art Sale). The art auction is the centerpiece of the South Carolina Arts Gala, an evening event celebrating South Carolina's arts community and recognizing recipients of the state's highest award in the arts, the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Awards. The gala and auction take place on Thursday, May 6, 2010, at the Columbia Museum of Art.

The art auction began in 1999 as an art sale held in conjunction with the Verner Awards. The project was originally conceived as a sales opportunity for artists and as an opportunity to build and promote arts patronage. The format for 2010 is a silent auction. A panel composed of members of the S.C. Arts Foundation and arts professionals will select artists for the auction.

Works included in the auction must:

  • be original and of high artistic quality
  • have a broad appeal
  • be representative of the artist’s style
  • framed with appropriate hanging devices

Additionally, 2-D work must not exceed 24” height and 36” width (inclusive of frame) to conform to the size of the freestanding wall. 3-D work should be freestanding or should be able to fit on a pedestal that is 24” x 24.” There are some exceptions for accommodations of larger work.

Artists are asked to list a minimum bid for the work.  If sold, the minimum bid will be split 75/25 (artist/SCAF). The purchase amount over and above the minimum bid will go to the S.C. Arts Foundation. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting arts education and arts development programs of the South Carolina Arts Commission.

Artists will be requested to provide a high-quality digital image of the selected work to be included in print and online promotional materials.

To be considered for the auction, please submit the following materials by Feb. 22 to:
